New Line has hired two screenwriters to create a follow up to the 2005 comedy Wedding Crashers, which will return the popular duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson. Last week Australian actress Isla Fisher, who featured in the original as the quirky and eccentric love interest for Vaughn's character, spilled the beans. All to argue that the project was definitely in the works.
Now we know she wasn't doing it for the publicity or to gauge the public's interest. Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are said to be writing the script as the New Line pair link up again after penning Fist Fight. That particular Ice Cube and Charlie Day romp won't hit screens until February 2017, by which time Susser and Robichaux might have completed a draft for the sequel.
Director: We Wanted Daniel Craig
Fingers crossed he still has an opening on his schedule with all that James Bond money. Because it appears as though Daniel Craig was on the hit list for a Wedding Crashers sequel. Director David Dobkin told Quora back in 2014 that the 007 star would have been the perfect foil for Vaughn and Wilson to expose their insecurities.
“Wedding Crashers came out at a time when people weren’t doing lots of sequels," said Dobkin. "We did come up with a great take. Vince, Owen and myself sat around at Owen’s house one day and broke the story. It was really really funny. We wanted Daniel Craig to be the ultimate wedding crasher, with his sexy body and his speedo, and the two guys would be incredibly threatened by him. He was like the next generation terminator of wedding crashing.”
Everything But The Official Stamp Of Approval
Deadline is excited by the prospect of a sequel as it is believed Dobkin, Vaughn, Wilson, Fisher and Rachel McAdams are coming back while Andrew Panay is doing likewise as a producer. This would indicate that New Line are getting all their ducks in a row to start production in earnest. But until the studio gives the green light this is all talk and speculation.
Both stars are getting on, with Vaughn now 46 and Wilson 48, something that might slow them down by the time they get the picture up and running. Then again, they're not a pair that take themselves too seriously and hopefully their young-at-heart attitude to life with prevail, as well as the damn movie!
