Theatrical trailer for Colonia under distributor Screen Media Films.
Set in Chile after General Pinochet's brutal military coup, Colonia follows one woman's mission to rescue her abducted boyfriend from the infamous Colonia Dignidad.
Back in 2014, Emma Watson was spotted paying a visit to Villa Baviera. While the gossip columns thought she was taking a vacation, she was instead researching her role for Colonia, since Villa Baviera was formerly known as Colonia Dignidad. The actress was drawn to the role due to the fact that it was empowering to women.
Colonia is based on the true story of the real Colonia Dignidad, an extreme cult known for agriculture and child sexual abuse; along with other crimes.
The film screened at the Toronto International Film Festival, which resulted in mixed reviews (at best). The film's factual claims come into question as the atrocities, and "evil" characters, seem to become exaggerated as the story progresses. Top that off with rumors of flat dialogue and one can see why all the major distributors passed on this one.
The cast may be small, but it is impressive. Taking advantage of the talents of Emma Watson, Daniel Brühl (Inglourious Basterds) and Michael Nyqvist (John Wick), the film looks like one helluva thriller while giving some insight into the goings-on inside the famous compound. It will be interesting to see how close Colonia sticks to fact vs fiction.
