The Smurfs Teaser Trailer (2011)

Teaser trailer for The Smurfs.

Audiences everywhere are in for a Smurfy good time as the Smurfs make their first 3D trip to the big screen. When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours – in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays, Sofia Vergara, and Hank Azaria star on camera opposite an all-star voice cast. Anton Yelchin will play Clumsy Smurf; comedy legend Jonathan Winters, who voiced roles in the "Smurfs" television series, will voice Papa Smurf; Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Katy Perry will play Smurfette; Alan Cumming will play Gutsy Smurf; "SNL's" Fred Armisen will voice Brainy Smurf; and George Lopez will play Grouchy Smurf.

In the live-action roles, Azaria will play the Smurfs' nemesis, the evil wizard Gargamel. Harris and Mays star as an expectant couple whose lives are turned upside down when the Smurfs cross over from their magical village to New York City. Vergara plays Odile, Harris's boss, a cosmetics executive.

Katy Perry was not allowed to watch The Smurfs when she was a kid, as her parents were ultra conservative pastors and they didn't consider it good for their children. She went on to voice Smurfette in this movie.

Peyo, creator of the Smurfs, says that they never take off their caps. However, in this movie, they take them off to use them as parachutes. Peyo's family insisted that during that scene, the Smurfs were only to be shown from above or below.

Quentin Tarantino was asked to voice Brainy Smurf, but he refused.

Smurfs are often described as being "three apples high" but this is not a specific measurement; it's a French term much like English speakers might say "knee high to a grasshopper." Smurfs are, in fact, seven inches high.

The film was released on The Smurfs thirtieth anniversary. In homage to this, when Gargamel is hit by a cab, Gutsy says he's had it coming for thirty years.

The Smurfs Teaser Trailer Screencap

The Smufs are back! Those of us who used to watch the cartoon as children will be thoroughly relieved to see that not only are they back, with a new, up to date CG look, but they actually still look like Smurfs!

This teaser doesn't give us much to go on, really. It just serves as a short announcement to let us know the film is coming, and to give us a brief look at the small blue creatures, and then it's over, but it's definitely worth celebrating that they're coming to the big screen.

Neil Patrick Harris and Jayma Mays star as our humans in the film, with Hank Azaria as a very impressive Gargamel, the long-time nemesis of the Smurfs.

The movie tells the story of what happens when the Smurfs are sucked into a vortex that transports them to New York City. Gargamel and Azrel, his evil cat, follow, but our Smurfs happen to wind up in the apartment of Patrick and Grace Winslow, a married and expectant couple. Naurally, when confronted with several small blue creatures who can talk and wear caps, they let them stay in the apartment.

All sorts of mayhem ensues, mainly revolving around Gargamel chasing the Smurfs, but of course, there's a wonderfully happy ending. This may not be the most exciting blue movie you'll ever watch, but it's a great tribute to our childhoods.
