Amidst a Depression-era Midwest milieu, conman Moses (Ryan O'Neal) takes Addie (Tatum O'Neal), the 9-year-old daughter of an old fling, under his wing on a series of manipulative adventures en route to the home of Addie’s aunt. Ripping people off in small towns along the way, Moses soon realizes that Addie is more than simply his travel companion, but a cunning accomplice.
