Theatrical trailer for Amy.
A heart-breaking journey. A ground-breaking motion picture.
This movie is actually a documentary about the late singer, Amy Winehouse. Originally it was made with the blessing and full cooperation of her family, but they later withdrew their support, saying that they felt the documentary focused too much on Amy's time as an addict.
The documentary's soundtrack features previously unheard tracks that Winehouse had completed before her death. The soundtrack earned Winehouse her second posthumous BRIT Award nomination, in 2016.
The film premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival. It also had a special showing at cinemas across the U.K. on June 30, 2015. Questions were taken via Facebook and Twitter, which were then answered by the film's director and producer, followed by a tribute to Winehouse.
Amy follows the life and career of the late Amy Winehouse, an exceptionally talented, yet troubled, singer. Just watching the trailer and hearing her rich vocals brings chills, and makes you realize what a huge talent she was.
Originally Amy's family were on board with the idea of this film being made, even providing producers with hours of previously unseen home video footage and recordings. They were also interviewed for their part in the documentary, before deciding that they no longer wished to be a part of it.
The reason given by Mitch Winehouse, Amy's dad, was that they felt the film focused more on the grip her addiction had on her and less on the person she was or the career she forged for herself.
I disagree with this. The fact is, it's impossible to discuss Amy Winehouse without referencing her drug and alcohol addiction and actually, this documentary serves as a strong and powerful reminder of the effect drugs can have on a person.
As talented as Amy was, her life sadly ended because she was an addict, and it's an unavoidable fact. It's also a fact that she worked while she was an addict, and since that took up a large part of her creative years, it has to be referenced.
Amy is a very powerful film. It's well-made, moving, and at times both heartwarming and heartbreaking to watch. As seen from the trailer, Amy contains several clips of the singer's performances, her recording sessions, and also more personal moments, documenting her meteoric rise to fame.
