Trailer for The Fate of the Furious, the 8th film in the Fast & Furious franchise.
Now that Dom and Letty are on their honeymoon and Brian and Mia have retired from the game—and the rest of the crew has been exonerated—the globetrotting team has found a semblance of a normal life. But when a mysterious woman (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) seduces Dom into the world of crime he can’t seem to escape and a betrayal of those closest to him, they will face trials that will test them as never before.
The original working title was Fast 8. It made sense, considering the history of selected installment names for the franchise. But the title was quickly updated before the weekend to The Fate of the Furious.
On the heels of 2015’s Furious 7, one of the, mind the pun, fastest movies to reach $1 billion worldwide in box-office history and the sixth-biggest global title of all time, comes the newest chapter in one of the most popular and enduring motion-picture serials of all time.
Charlize Theron plays the so-called "villain" in The Fate of the Furious. This is the first time that the villain is played by a female in the Fast & Furious franchise. While hearing that the recently buzz-cut actress was going to be rocking long dreadlocks, it was hard to imagine if she could pull it off. Let's just call it: she does.
The film is based in New York City, Iceland and Cuba. It is the first Hollywood movie to be shot in Cuba.
This will be F. Gary Gray's first time taking the director's chair for a Fast & Furious film. But he is no stranger to car chases. Just take a look at one of his other directing efforts, The Italian Job.
If you're looking for a bit of six degrees of separation with F. Gary Gray, here's a good one. Do you know what his feature film debut was? It was the classic hit Friday.
Well, the Fast & Furious gang are back whether you wanted them or not. Hard to believe that this is the eighth film in the franchise that first hit theaters back in 2009. If you do the math, that is at a rate of one film per year.
It seems like that, with every new installment in this franchise, they try to up the anti and top the previous film. So might as well throw in some more action and crazier stunts. I keep thinking that is not possible, but they always seem to surprise me. This time around the "it" stunt involves a submarine. A submarine?!? Just when we thought the tank was an insane idea, they had to add on to the tonnage.
We do get an interesting plot twist with this film. As shown in The Fate of the Furious Trailer, Dominic goes over to the dark side. The tantalizing Cipher (Charlize Theron) seems to have complete control over Dom's moral compass. This could add a new element that brings just enough to the story line to (at least) keep audiences interested. Without a doubt this film will bring the action and possibly some plot...but do we need another Fast & Furious film?
